If you've been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but aren't sure what you're walking into, this post is for you. Most people who ask this question have never trained a martial art before. They're not sure if they're fit enough, experienced enough, or whether they'll feel completely out of their depth. The honest answer is that those concerns are normal — and a good gym will have already thought about how to address them.
Here's what a beginner BJJ class in Kent actually looks like, and what you can expect at Ascend Jiu Jitsu in Ashford.
You don't need any experience to walk through the door
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art focused on controlling an opponent and applying submissions using technique rather than strength. That means it rewards people who think, not just people who are naturally athletic. It also means complete beginners can learn it — and learn it well — with the right structure around them.
At Ascend, beginners don't join general classes and try to keep up. They start with a dedicated 12-week Beginners Course, designed specifically for adults starting from zero. You'll train alongside other beginners, guided by experienced coaches at every step.

What happens in a typical beginner session
A structured beginner class follows a predictable format. You'll know what's coming and why. At Ascend, sessions typically include:
A warm-up focused on movement patterns specific to jiu jitsu — things like shrimping, bridging, and rolling. These aren't familiar movements for most people, but they become second nature quickly.
Technical instruction on a core position or concept. In the early weeks this covers fundamental postures, how to move safely on the ground, and the basic positions that everything else in jiu jitsu is built on.
Drilling — practising what you've just been shown with a partner in a controlled, cooperative way. There's no pressure to perform. You're learning, not competing.
Guided situational work as the course progresses, where you apply techniques in a structured context before any live sparring is introduced.
Nothing is left unexplained. If you're confused, you ask. That's part of the process.
What you don't need to worry about
The most common concerns people have before their first class are almost always the same:
I'm not fit enough. You don't need to be. Fitness develops naturally through training. Nobody expects you to arrive in shape — that's what training is for.
I'll be the only beginner. At Ascend, the Beginners Course means you're always training with people at the same stage as you. You won't be thrown into a class of experienced practitioners and left to figure it out.
It'll be intimidating. A well-run gym doesn't feel intimidating. Ascend is built around calm coaching, structured sessions, and a culture where ego doesn't belong on the mat. Members range from their early twenties to their fifties.
I'll have to spar straight away. No. Sparring is introduced gradually over the course of 12 weeks, and only when you're ready. Your first session won't involve any live grappling.
What to wear and bring
For your first session, comfortable clothing is all you need — a t-shirt and shorts or joggers. You'll train barefoot. No gi, no equipment, no specialist kit required. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and the coaching team will show you around and answer any questions before the session starts.
What happens after your first class
If you enjoy it, you continue with the course. Over 12 weeks you'll move through a clear progression — foundations, control and defence, and then supported sparring in the final weeks. By the end, you'll understand the fundamentals, feel genuinely confident on the mat, and be ready to move into regular classes with a clear path ahead of you.
If you're not sure after your first session, that's fine too. The trial exists for exactly that reason.
